Open Forum

President’s Corner
Water System: As of this writing, authorization to
proceed with construction of the water system improvements has not been
received from the NCDENR. Therefore, the Association has not received
proposals or bids to do the work. Until that information is received, any
proposed assessment would be guess work. A meeting will be scheduled as
soon as sufficient information is available and reasonable notice of the
amount of the assessment can be give to all property owners.
Collections: The Association continues to pursue
the collection of unpaid annual fees and assessments. In a recent case the
Association recovered over $11,000 as the result of a single foreclosure
action. After hotly contesting the foreclosure in court, the property
owners avoided foreclosure by paying the amount due to the Association and
additional costs. While the account could have been resolved by paying the
amount billed, the property owners’ resistance cost them dearly, running
the bill up to about $16,000 which they had to pay in full to avoid
foreclosure. The additional money was for attorney’s fees and expenses
related to the foreclosure. The Board intends to pursue additional
foreclosures and to recover the cost of doing so from the property owners
or from the sale of the lots and houses.
Gates: Construction of the gates should begin shortly. Preliminary
work is underway. Once that is completed and all materials are on hand the
construction can proceed. |

Ladies Lunch Group
The Granny Squirrel women and friends have met for
lunch on various occasions in the New Year. In February they visited The
Brothers restaurant in Murphy. The building was attractive, but the open
areas had a high noise level not conducive to chitchat.
In March a good group headed for the Cherokee Country
Club to dine at the Long House. The lunches were tasty and the view of the
Golf course delightful.
April found the group in town at the Cole House where a
fine atmosphere of yesteryear and handsome antiques and art inspire the
senses. The food was delightful too. Come and join in on most 3rd
Thursdays. Check the web-site to be sure. |

Featured Family
Terry and Marilyn Frederick were born in southern Indiana about three
miles apart. They haven’t been apart for the last fifty years, and will
celebrate their golden anniversary in December.
Marilyn attended Indiana Business College and worked in the business
world before becoming a full time mom to Jackie and two sons. After moving
to Orlando, she worked as an administrative assistant at Florida Hospital
for twenty years.
Terry received his masters from Indiana State University and then
taught Math and coached for eight years. Later he earned his Ph.D. at the
University of Wisconsin and taught at Purdue for five years.
In 1975 he took a position at the University of Central Florida, in
Orlando, building a computer science department which become rated one of
the best in the country. He became associate dean of the College of Arts
and Science. He remains now as associate dean of the college while acting
as director of the Film and Digital Media Department. You get the
picture-- "Brainy People".
Terry and Marilyn have been a welcome addition to our Granny Squirrel
community. Not only are they delightful folks, but the co-
owners of their home, daughter Jackie and son-in-law Brad Mueller, are
an extra bonus as well! The
whole family has pitched in to make many welcome improvements here in
our Granny Squirrel Mountain community.

Nature Watch
As we pass Granny Squirrel homes in the spring a variety of flowering
bushes flourish. There are many easy care perennial plants that can grace
a small garden and add interest to your landscaping as well.
The Hosta family has many leafy green varieties that shoot up lovely
clusters of purple flowers in the summer. Asiatic lilies come in bulbs and
bloom in a riot of colors in June. Iris, daffodils and creeping phlox
thrive in the spring. All of the above enjoy some mountain shade and
require little care. Once they root, they should grow more prolific each
year. |

Granny's Gossip
I waked up to this gosh awful noise this morn. Granny figured it was a
bar near by, but then I heered it again and it was jist Pa snoring away.
Granny don’t need no fancy gadget clock to get awoke anymore!
Speaking about waking up, jist yesterday the trees were necked as a
newborn kin. Over night the budlings done spring out, covering me mountain
view with all that green.
Them nice Frederick’s were here for a visit. Pa ran into them; says
they look good like 40 somethings. Pa’s eyes going bad lately. Them folks
look everyday leastwise 50! Theys worker bees though, makes up for their
age.
Wes Griffiths been out cutting the grass and keeping the mountain
looking like God’s bit a heaven. That man can sweat! Granny stopped to say
hey jist when he commenced to sneezing, and I git my evening shower in
advance.
The Kuberg’s handsome son was in the club house one day fixing to make
it cool in summer and warm in winter in thar. That boys a smart little a
wipper snapper and polite liken the old days.
The flares are a-blooming in youins yards. The Weslers and Hamiltons
yards is so purty. If we miss y’all, at leastwise we git comforting
effects from the gardens.
Thangs is gonna git popping as summer gits her hot lil feet down. Ifin
