Featured Family

In the early part of 2006 Frank and Helen Hamilton left to minister at a church in Muncie, Indiana.  Helen was a wonderful secretary and organizer. Frank was a busy board member who did what needed doing, like putting up the fence along the road.  They energized our community here, and when they left there was quite a hole.   While they are missed, they are doing what they love.

Things Change: Someone made the comment to me that more full time residents seem to be moving to Granny Squirrel and it is becoming a community.  While there has been a recent increase in full time residents, and more say they are coming, that will not make Granny Squirrel a community because it always has been.  Whether they are part time or full time residents we have a community composed of good friends and good neighbors.  We have volunteers who work for the benefit of their neighbors, their community, and those outside of the subdivision.  Unfortunately, things do change and some of those good neighbors and good friends move on.  Fortunately, others arrive in their place.

Lennie and Peachie Friedman, long time Granny Squirrel property owners, decided it was time for a change and have sold their cabin.  Lennie served numerous terms as a member of the Board of Directors and as Secretary and Treasurer of the Association.  Peachie was always there to support him.  They actively participated in social events, contributed improvements to the clubhouse, and were interested in the welfare of the community.  Lennie and Peachie both care deeply for their neighbors and that will not change even though they are no longer members of our community.

Don and Velva Wright have been at Granny Squirrel longer than anyone.  First as part time, and now as full time residents, they brought more to our community than words could ever express.  They too have decided that it is time for a different style of living and their immaculate home is on the market.  Don and Velva have given freely of their time not only to Granny Squirrel but to people in the entire area.  Both participate in every way and always brought a positive outlook and good company to all occasions.

Mark and Alodia Perkins have also moved on although their place remains in the family.  They were long time property owners at Granny Squirrel who were closer to being full time than part time residents over the years, Mark was actively involved in the administration of the Association and most recently served as a member of the water system committee.

We can all measure our accomplished in life by asking whether we left things better than we found.  There is no doubt that Lennie, Peachie, Don, Velva, Mark, and Alodia made Granny Squirrel a better place than it was when they came.  While these good neighbors will be missed they will not be forgotten.

Updates

Water System:  The process of preparing requests for bids is continuing and therefore a date for the special meeting has not been set.  All property owners will be notified of the meeting date once contractors respond and the engineers determines that the bids are in proper form.   All proper bids will be discussed at the meeting as well as the amount of the special assessment.  The schedule of work may be changed to bring the new tank on line sooner rather than spending money to repair damage to one of the old tanks caused by the winter weather.

Gates:  The gates are working well.  The construction of the stone columns should be underway in May.  Remote openers, similar to garage door openers, are now available from the Secretary.  Contact Jackie Mueller at 321-5043 to obtain your opener.  There is a $50.00 refundable deposit for each opener.  Do to the limited number of openers they will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

As we drove off for our Easter trip home, I surveyed the hearty Spring start to our garden, including Azaleas brimming with buds. We had some delightful spring weather in March that gave confidence to even the summer plants like the Hostas and Lilies.

While we were away, however, winter returned. Good Friday brought Granny Squirrel a snow that left a few inches on the ground, and people reported to me that temps dropped below twenty degrees. We were surprised to learn that Pennsylvania had not been as cold as our area here. Upon our return we checked our garden and to our dismay found most of the plants had turned brown or to limp mush from the severe cold.

Today, it is warming up again. As for the garden, a few more annuals will need to be tucked into those bare spots this year to cheer-up my gardener’s heart.

Granny's Gossip

Hey to my friends near and far. Granny thot the Springy season was jist bout here. Pa tackened a notion to git the icesickle lights down. That minded me that warmer weather wis on the way.

Granny had em bring the Eastery baskets down and bawl the aggs while I tended to the neighborly goings on.

I heered that me great granny is written up in a book they call “Seven Moons”.Ya caint believe everthing ya hear now! Granny gonna give youins some real news.

Dang, ifin it didn’t snow on me jonquils afore the Easter bunny ever showed up this year. Granny had to put her bonnet back on the shelf and git out me wooly cap with the ear flaps.

We have new neighbors here in the holler. That cheered us up as we were saying good-by to some old friends. Sad good-bys to Lenny and Peachie, and Mark and Alodia. The Perkins kin Diane Sullivan and her mate Ron, have taken the familiar challet into their tender care. We got us some full time folk a-staying. Say howdy to Brad and Jackie Mueller, Bob and Kathy Hill, Alex and Bill Moore and Kappy Cole.

Then thars that new fangled gate that opens when we push the buttons. Why Granny hurried thru quick as me leggs would go only to spot Pa still parked by the button patch trying to figgy out how to close the gol dang thang.

Well, Spring is a-coming in little spurts of warm sun. Soon y’all will come too my friends and Granny Squirrel will be an even warmer place.
